“I had not created a digital story prior to my participation in the DST workshop. So, the workshop sessions not only provided a prime opportunity for me to finally write my story as a practicing ECE, they reinforced the power of storytelling and how digitizing can make it both visually and audibly more compelling. Among the very interesting concepts learned, the practical examples of how ‘finding a moment’ in the story can enhance the impact of the message the story seeks to convey, and how storytelling is a form of advocacy was very instructive. The learning reinforced my views about the importance of the work of the AECEO and their allies that promote the understanding of the lived experiences of the early childhood workforce including their needs and challenges, and how the power of storytelling is a vital part of the process.

The sense of community created at the sessions was quite indelible! The various stories of fellow course participants were strong bolsters to the fact that everyone has a story that is best told by the individual concerned and how finding the right forum could be a good catalyst to unearth such stories. The workshop further revealed that many of the experiences of the storytellers are quite relatable as they echoed personal experiences/sentiments.

Overall, I had a deeper appreciation for the personal and professional values of the storytellers conveyed during the story circle, and the idea of having a ‘professional friend’ corroborates my personal belief that no man is an island and that we need one another to survive!”

“I felt a synergy of comfort and discomfort in learning how to tell my truths with others in every session I attended. I think that’s what pushed me to grow as the storyteller of my own truths. Beyond that, the attentiveness, empathy and guidance I received helped me resist self-doubt and believe that I, too, am a storyteller of the collective truths that are weaved together powerfully by each and every bit of our stories. While the dominant culture of competition got me stuck in comparing and beating myself up sometimes, learning with others has shown me that our stories can enrich one another. We came to this opportunity barely knowing one another. We came out of it given the chance to be vulnerable and to embrace others’ vulnerability. This doesn’t happen everyday.”
