Full Day Learning a Big Step Forward

PRESS RELEASE

Full Day Learning a Big Step Forward

October 27, 2009

TORONTO, ON - A commitment today from the provincial government to begin implementation of full day early learning for four and five-year-olds is a wise investment in Ontario‟s children and families, says the Association of Early Childhood Educators Ontario (AECEO).

The early learning program will establish a foundation for comprehensive services for all children and families.

“Registered early childhood educators (RECEs) are committed to a team-based approach to full day learning for four and five-year-olds,” says Diane Kashin, President Elect of the AECEO.

“We have evidence of strong, successful partnerships between registered early childhood educators and teachers that serve children and families well.”

“With their specialization in early years curriculum, child development, and parental engagement, RECEs are ready and willing to deliver full-day learning programs alongside Ontario‟s teachers,” Kashin says.

“This initial investment will encourage communities across the province to cultivate the „community hubs‟ described in Dr. Pascal‟s report, and it will foster a continuation of good work already happening across the province.”

“Today‟s step forward is the beginning of a transformation of early learning and care in Ontario, and families across the province are going to see the benefits. Now it‟s time for municipalities, school boards and educators to get to work.”
